Dry Cat Food 101: The Top 10 Reviews
When we want to eat something, we usually go for things we really like or we know is good for our health. Our little feline friends deserve the same treatment – and dry cat food is definitely a great choice. It can be left in a bowl for days, without spoiling. It can be used for treats and training, it’s easy to store and it’s economically cost-effective, especially if you have multiple cats. Just make sure the diet is always meat-based, without vegan or vegetarian options and you’re good to go! Here are our staff members’ first-hand experiences to help you make the right choice.
What to look for:
Age criteria: make sure you pick the right category – kitten (up to 1 year), adult (1-10 years) and senior (more than 10 years), because not all cats should eat the same food. Their needs vary both ingredient- and size-wise.
Environment label: your indoor and your outdoor cat should have different diets, because of their different lifestyles and environments.
Health formulas: cats, as people, may suffer from all kinds of infections and allergies, and their food, being the best prevention tool, should be picked correctly, so it helps them stay healthy. There are a lot of different formulas which control weight, allergies, bone development, bladder, skin and coat conditions, etc.
Taste: this is what matters the most. Your cat won’t know whether it’s kibble is for a senior, or an outdoor cat, or for hairball control. But it will eat it only if it tastes good! Chicken, beef, turkey, rabbit, tuna, duck – make sure it makes your kitty run towards the food plate!

This selection contains all essential vitamins & minerals your cat needs. It contains high quality protein for healthy and strong muscles. It’s a mixture of four different and nutritious flavors.
- Quality ingredients
- No fillers
- Great value for the price
- Smaller kibbles
- Fur gets more shinier
- Doesn’t relieve the buildup of hairballs in all cases
Conclusion: This food seems to be liked by most of my cats, one is a picky eater and didn’t like the small kibbles. Works well for UTI issues. The hairball reducing benefits are not as good as I had hoped, as it didn’t work on all of my cats as effectively. The kibble is small and easy for most cats to eat. For the price it cost, I feel that this brand and formula provide a good diet and nutrients that my cats need.
This formula is a natural, grain-free recipe that contains a lot of vitamins and minerals, highly digestible proteins and optimal amino acids, which are important for the healthy body of your cat. It’s made with roasted venison and smoked salmon, which will attract any cat to the food tray.
- Quality ingredients
- Great value for the price
- No fillers (corn or soy)
- Strong litter box odor (due to high protein intake)
Conclusion: My cats love this. It comes in really small pellets so it is great for elderly cats. The difference in my cats’ coats is amazing. Their fur has gone all shiny and lustrous due to Wild Cat’s nutritious ingredients. The only down side is the smell it leaves after digestion.
Blue Buffalo is dedicated to picking only the best ingredients for cats. They don’t use chicken by-product meals, but only deboned chicken, whole grains and veggies. This is a balanced formula for an indoor cat, however there are other options – hairball formula, sensitive stomach, health body weight. The price/quality ratio seems fair, making this a fine choice for your cat.
- The main ingredient is deboned chicken, no by-product meals
- Fur gets silkier
- Easy digestion
- Strong smell
- Can take time for a cat to like it
Conclusion: I’ve bought this for my cat, because she had issues with digestion. After only two days of eating this food, her stomach got better, she is full of energy and, after a week, her fur became even softer to the touch. She didn’t like it at first, but smaller portions mixed with other food did the trick. I’m looking forward to feeding her only Blue Buffalo and hoping it will completely eliminate digestion problems.
The Wellness CORE is a perfect example of a mid-tier dry cat food product. Their recipe is packed with animal protein with no plant-based fillers and is natural and gluten free. It’s enriched with Omega acids, antioxidants and probiotics which make sure that your cat’s gut flora and fauna remains in healthy balance.
- Grain, fish, byproduct free
- All natural, indoor formula
- Gluten free
- Made in the USA
- Pellets might be too small for some cats
Conclusion: This dry food was my cat’s love at first bite and it kept attracting her every time the bag is opened! After spending some time on this diet, she became more trim, active and her coat is shinier than before. She does sometime have the issue of pellets just sliding out of her mouth when she eats, which leads me to believe that bigger cats might have an issue with this.
Natural Balance is working hard to put only the necessary ingredients into the bag. Limited ingredient diets are specifically made for cats who need grain-free food and who can digest green peas well. There are chicken, duck, salmon and venison versions to help your cat adjust to a new diet easily.
- No artificial flavors and colors
- Great for sensitive stomachs
- There are more peas than chicken!
- For all life stages (non-specific)
Conclusion: Since our vet told us that both cats have grain allergies, we switched to Natural Balance. Cats loved the food and it helped stop their puking. I love how they are doing better, but I always mix the kibble with chicken, since they need to eat more meat. I wish there were kitten and adult options, since older cats mostly prefer larger food pieces.
The Wellness Complete Health dry cat food line does what the name suggests! It provides a complete and balanced diet for your cat, offering an optimal amount of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, while being all natural and without any artificial flavors or preservatives. This brand is recommended by most cat dieticians and overall it provides great results.
- High quality muscle meat
- Low grain
- All natural, no artificial flavors
- Goes well when mixed with a little bit of water
- Made in the USA
- The pellets are kinda small for bigger cats
Conclusion: I’m overall very pleased with this dry food product and so are my cats. It’s not their absolute favorite, but they enjoy it whenever it’s on their menu! Unlike other dry cat foods, these pellets go well when mixed with water, since their natural smell doesn’t fade away and it seems to remain delicious even when wet.
Made with outstanding taste and extraordinary nutrition in mind, Purina Pro will incite your cats true potential. Knowing that cats are natural carnivores all Purina Pro dry foods have at least 40% of protein and real meat.
- High in protein
- Helps with urinary issues
- Strange smell (can be off putting to some cats)
- Shipping time (sometimes you wait a while until it arrives)
Conclusion: Not all of my cats loved this, two of my older males ate it right up but my youngest one wouldn’t touch it. He gave it a smell and then just went on strike, which happened sometimes as he is a picky eater. Helped well with my older (11 years old) cats urinary infection, and worked as it was supposed to.
With its special all natural fiber blend and it’s natural hairball control formula, this dry food will help your kitty move hair and already formed hairball from its digestive system.
- Enticing flavor
- All natural ingredients
- Neutral odor (makes cleaning easier)
- Reduces hairballs
- High caloric content
Conclusion: It does what it says and cleaning after is not a big chore anymore as the odor isn’t that… Erm let’s say the odor lost some of its potent musk and that’s good. The price is kinda step when you look at the ingredients so they are natural ingredients just not premium, especially for its price range. Some kitties might gain weight as it has a high caloric count so watch out for that and how you dose it.
With your felines wild and carnivorous nature in mind Fancy Feast Gourmet Dry Cat Food is made with the delicious taste of chicken and turkey.
- The flavor is enticing, even the pickiest of eaters will love it
- Good for digestion
- Interesting shape and texture
- Too many fillers
- The smell
Conclusion: If you have a picky eater like my youngest male then this is a must get. This is almost all he ever eats and he loves it. It’s a little overpriced when you factor in the ingredients and other brands but is overall ok and the cats eat it like crazy which is most important after all.
