The 7 Most Effective & Safe Cat Shampoos
If you are looking for the absolute best shampoo for your cat then you are in luck, the very best one is produced by your kitty. Ow yeah, that’s right, cats are walking grooming salons straight down to their teeth, nails, paws, tongues and saliva. Despite all of this though, there can still be some occasions when your pet needs a bath. For this reason we tested out a few and picked the best ones…
What to look for:
Type of shampoo: Waterless or regular. Some cats hate taking a bath despite that they may need it (either for health reasons or otherwise). So waterless may be the way to go. If your cat has a mild personality and isn’t too afraid of getting wet then the normal kind is best because it has a much wider variety range.
Kind of shampoo: NEVER… NEVER EVER use a human shampoo on your cat. No matter how mild it says it is on the bottle, it’s still probably too severe for your cat. Only use the type that your cat needs at the moment i.e. a shampoo for dry skin dandruff, coat conditioning, fleas etc.
1. Douxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo 16.9 oz.
Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo not only has a strong, antiseptic activity, but also acts as a moisturizing and restructuring agent. The long lasting effects of this cat shampoo resist rinsing, and so protect the skin from any additional irritations and loss of moisture. It can be used as an effective treatment for superficial or severe skin conditions that respond well to chlorhexidine.
- This cat shampoo helps with irritation, allergies, hair loss, infections… you name it
- Strong antiseptic activity makes sure that your cat’s skin will be protected properly
- Nice neutral smell
- Not a single one!
Conclusion: And here it is, the best cat shampoo I ever purchased for my cat! Her skin gets easily irritated during warm summer months and her condition instantly got better after the very first bath. Not only that, but this cat shampoo made sure her skin remained healthy and moisturized for quite a while. On top of all this, it’s incredibly affordable.
The runner-up cat shampoo comes from Particular Pets. Thanks to the aloe vera, chamomile and rosemary, this cat shampoo is very mild and it can be used on kitties which are sensitive to a lot of products. With a strong cleaning power it soothes and gently cleanses the top layer of the skin.
- All natural ingredients help dealing with cats that have sensitive skin and fur
- Shampoo washes off easily
- Nice, mild smell
- Satisfaction guarantee, made in the USA
- Needs more than one bath to take effect
Conclusion: Overall I’m very pleased with this cat shampoo. The smell is soothing and the shampoo itself washes off nicely from the fur and skin. It would be nice if it was a bit more affordable, especially considering the size, but aside from that, it does the job! The only issue is that sometimes you need more than one bath for certain irritations to go away. I have two cats and the shampoo worked on one of them immediately, while the other needed a second bath to entirely remove her skin condition.

Since cats hate to get wet this Waterless Cat shampoo is a perfect solution to give your cat a bath in a snap. This no-rinse foam cat shampoo has a lot of natural ingredients like Aloe Vera, neem oil, vitamin E, and oatmeal that will sooth dry skin and itching and at the same time act as a natural cleanser that moisturizes skin and coat.

- Not enough washings per bottle
Conclusion: I have three cats and they all hate baths. Bought this, and they smell so much BETTER! I was surprised that my cats didn’t object to being rubbed down with this stuff. No wonder, as its unique formula has a relaxing and calming fragrance. It’s a nice foam that’s easy to apply and smells wonderful. Amazing for my picky, temperamental babies.
A great non bathing antiseptic leave on mousse that makes treating your kitty a stress free (for the both of you) and enjoyable experience. Phytosphingosine salicyloyl , and active ingredient in this product is a proceramide that helps restore the skin barrier, and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
- Good for cats and dogs
- Helps with allergies
- Helps with chronic skin problems
- Waterless, no bathing required
- Can sometime take a few weeks to show results
Conclusion: A great waterless product which makes treating your cat much easier. Also has a pleasant smell (at least to cats) so most cats won’t fidget too much when you put it on.
Aloe vera, chamomile, rosemary and honey extract – plus the ease of use and amazing smell, it’s all my cat needs! There is even a hypoallergenic version if your cat (or dog, since it does the job on both) is extra sensitive.
- All-natural ingredients
- Stops and prevents itching
- Safe for puppies and kittens
- Smell is too strong for some pets, especially cats
- Handles dirt only, not fleas, lice, ticks, etc.
Conclusion: We all want the best for our pets. My cat enjoyed a bath with this shampoo and I loved his smell afterwards. However, considering the price, I would expect it to keep my cat safe from ticks and fleas too.
Aloe, lanolin, coconut extract and oatmeal – these can soothe your pet’s skin very well and keep it safe from fleas for up to 28 days!
- Does not irritate your pet’s skin
- Smells wonderful
- Safe for kittens and puppies
- Not effective enough!
Conclusion: I read this shampoo’s ingredient list and it sounded really promising. My cat loves bubble baths and she enjoyed doing one with this shampoo. I loved using it because I didn’t have to wear gloves and there were no irritations on my skin or my cats, however, a few fleas would always stick around. So, considering the affordable price, I would recommend it for regular baths, but not for keeping all the creepy crawlies away from your pet.
