The Top 7 Cat Collars You Can Find

Even if your kitty lives entirely indoors, there’s always a chance he might wind up outside somehow. Being natural escape artists cats somehow manage to squeeze their bodies into, and out of, all sorts of confining spaces. In case your feline friend should ever wonder off, it’s best to make sure your cat is wearing a collar. There are a number of different collars on the market these days and the most important thing is to choose one that suits both you and your cat. Because of the wide range of choices of cat collars our staff tested a few out, these are our top picks.

What to look for:

Collar Material: Most cat collars are now made of nylon. It’s strong, hard to break, and won’t irritate your cat’s neck or skin. Besides nylon, there are other options like leather or rubber.

Closure Mechanism: That’s the most important part on a collar. Make sure the collar you’re considering has a strong buckle that’s easy to open/close and that will hold the collar around your cat’s neck without breaking.

Adjustment: No matter what type of collar you choose for your cat, a proper fit is crucial. Make sure your cat’s potential collar has proper adjustment options to fit your cat. You should be able to fit two fingers between your cat’s neck and the collar.

Warning: An important tip for everyone getting any collar. Consult your veterinarian before you get a collar for your cat. Additionally, try to put the collar on your cat during a day when you’ll be home so you can monitor if there are any reactions. If there are ANY negative effects, remove it immediately and talk to your vet.

2

The PetSafe harness is made of thick nylon which provides gentle pressure on your cat’s body and shoulders without choking the neck area. The 4-foot leash can extend up to 6 feet, providing a “give” when your cat goes to the furthest end of the leash. There’s also a safety clip which can be used to apply a longer leash, if you wish to do so.

Pros:

  • Strong and secure
  • No choking, only tight around the body
  • Available in 6 colors and 3 sizes

Cons:

  • Takes patience and skill to set up properly

Conclusion: Our runner-up leash is absolutely fantastic! It’s surprising when you realize how strong it is, but at the same time it doesn’t constrict or choke your cat one bit! The collar around the neck is present, but it provides minimal pressure and lets your cat move her head and neck around normally. The only issue is setting it up on your cat for the first time, because you have to get everything right in order to prevent her from pulling a Houdini and escaping.

3

Sometimes your cat gets loose or you decide to release her yourself, that’s why having a personalized collar is important if she ever gets lost. Don’t fret having your cat outside anymore by having a Personalized Reflective Cat Collar in any color you find fits best with your cat’s look.

Pros

  • Reflective
  • Personalized
  • Easy to release safety buckle
  • Wide variety of colors

Cons

  • Poor craftsmanship

Conclusion: Although I like the simplicity and the usefulness of this collar I am somewhat dismayed by the fact that after a couple of months the reflective tape started to peel off. But apart from that, considering its low price tag it does the job as intended.

4.Kitty Convict Cat ID Collars

4

GoTags wants everyone to know that your cat is not a stray one. They made this high quality collar which can have the embroidered info of your cat or its ID tag. It is completely adjustable (8-12 inches) and has a breakaway buckle which snaps open should a cat get caught. It comes in only one color – orange, the color for indoor cats.

Pros:

  • Adjustable
  • 22 characters for a name and a phone number
  • 2 choices – embroidery or ID tag
  • Removable bell
  • Breakaway buckle

Cons:

  • Breakaway clasp opens easily
  • Lettering might be in an inadequate place (so you can barely read it or move the keeper)

Conclusion: Both of my cats love to wander around neighbourhood, so having ID collars is definitely a great idea. We’ve tested both versions, with an ID tag and with embroidery. Cats got adjusted to them in a second, they weren’t even bothered by cute tiny bells. When they started fighting playfully, one collar just snapped open. It’s a nice safety touch, but I think grown up active cats might find them too easy to take off. The embroidery looks nice, however, if you use many characters, you’ll end up with a keeper covering some of the letters.

  • No fleas/ticks so far
  • Nice leather area with a buckle to ensure a perfect fit
  • Authentic Baltic Amber

Cons:

  • Can catch long fur

Conclusion:  I was a bit skeptical of the efficacy of raw amber as a bug repellent, until I’ve tested this collar on my cat that suffers from skin problems due to flea attacks. Ever since my cat has been wearing this collar I haven’t seen her scratch at all. The leather clasp area is well-constructed and adds to the elegance of the collar. However, the amber part is not a stretchy material as I’ve expected it to be, so be sure you are ordering the correct size for your cat. Overall, I would recommend this product. Cons:

  • The tracking service is not free (you cannot use the system without paying the fee)

It also has a health monitor that tracks the activity level of your cat and reports it in detail in three different types of graphs.
